Our website(s) through the ages...

Some of you probably already knew a little about my website project(s) over the years.

Ever since I first went online in 1993, at the time on a Mac Performa, via an expensive and excruciatingly slow 14.4k modem connection, I had the ambition to make a website of my own... I finally got around to that in 1998 or so, when I had upgraded my Mac to a PowerBook G3 (300 MHz, those were the days...), and the internet connection had quadrupled to a 56.6k link. In the early days, it was mostly a photo repository. And then it never got updated...

In 1999, Catherine and I got married. A colleague even made a website with pictures of our wedding. Unfortunately, it seems to have vanished in cyberspace for good by now... I guess no need to update any more...

Then, when Sara was born, our website was an excellent way to announce this fact to the world, and post pictures for all to see, when they wanted it, instead of sending multi-megabyte files into tiny in-boxes. From the fall of 2001, thanks to the broadband connection in our new house, updating the site became cheaper, a bit easier, and the uploading was definitely quicker. At the beginning of 2003, Nicolas' arrival was well documented. You can still have a look at these sites here or alternately here. Unfortunately, it took many hours and an occasional good [unprintable] expression or two to master the software required to make the site look as clunky as it eventually did... And then it never got updated...

My (host) brother David, who has provided me with many great ideas over the years, from out on the very cutting edge of internet cool that he works, told me about this website called Ofoto, a photo sharing service, that would even allow people to order actual photo prints from the pictures I submitted. I liked that idea, so I went and uploaded many many pictures during the course of 2002 and 2003, and sent out occasional invitations to some of you to have a look at them (as this was/is a 'by-invitation-only' service). And then it never got updated...

Then he told me about Blogger , a new phenomenon on the web. A "blog", short for web-log, is a kind of diary that allows virtually anyone to make his/her thoughts and observations, rants and philosophical discussions, available online. Usually for free, and thanks to Blogger.com, amongst others, without knowing all the little intricate details about page layout and HTML, XML, etc. So, in mid-2004, I signed up with Blogger and started my own blog. And then it never got updated...

Until yesterday.

Yesterday, I got around to trying out my own "Broadcast Machine". Having recently gotten into another new feature on the internet, "podcasting" (audio casting, especially cool in combination with iTunes and an iPod), I found out some stuff about "vidcasting" (video casting), and just the sheer endless possibilities of media sharing online. So, I decided to start my own "TV Channel". Fully digital, fully online. You can read more about it in the posts I added to my blog, and check out ElpelsoTV when you get a chance. If you have a Mac (if not, why not? ), check out DTV, a free player you can use to watch this (and other) Internet TV channel. A (re)new(ed) website was born. I do hope and intend to keep this updated more often...

And finally, as I was blogging away yesterday, I came across this company : AudioBlogger.com. So, I added my first audio blog to my site as well. Cherry on the cake...

So, go on, and have a look. I hope you will laugh with the items on ElpelsoTV, and will keep checking for updated stuff. If you have an RSS-enabled browser or other RSS-software, you can subscribe to the channel and get automatic updates when they appear. You can do the same for the blog, of course.

I look forward to your comments and criticisms (be gentle, please!).

P.S. : All of this stuff is possible (even easy!) thanks to Apple hardware and software... But for all you unbelievers...
